Francis D. Hughes was born around 1839 near Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire, Wales. He joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and began to preach in his native country. He married Harriet Davies on May 3, 1869 in Merthyr Tydfil. His wife, Harriet, passed away in June 1885. His children were Catherine Ann "Kate", Elen Jane, Francis D., David, John and Florence.
